Donkeys Tail Sedum Morganianum Care

DONKEY’S TAIL / The burro’s tail cactus has long draping stems with thick overlapping leaves, resembling a braided donkey’s tail. The blue-green succulent, also known as the donkey tail plant, looks striking in a hanging basket near a window. Keep temperatures between 65˚ and 75˚F / 18˚ and 24˚C, 🌡 and keep the plant away from cool drafts. The burro tail’s stems can grow 3 feet / 91 cm long and they require little maintenance.

SOIL: Use a cactus and succulent potting mix, or create your own quick-draining soil with one-third potting mix, one-third coarse sand, and one-third perlite. Add vermicompost to provide extra nutrients and beneficial enzymes.
LIGHT: Place burro’s tail cactus in bright light. Morning sun is fine. Hot afternoon sun can burn the leaves and turn them pale green.
WATERING In the summer, water whenever the top of the potting medium becomes dry to a depth of 1 inch, and keep the potting medium lightly moist but never soggy. In winter, water whenever the top of the potting medium becomes dry to a depth of 2 inches.
FEEDING Apply a half-strength cactus fertilizer once every 6 weeks in spring and summer.
HUMIDITY. This succulent tolerates dry air very well; however, it does not like drafts and will throw its leaves on the ground in protest.
FERTILIZER. Use any balanced organic fertilizer. Apply once a month until the plant goes dormant in winter. Stop feeding in winter.

POTTING. When your plant needs up-potting, carefully shift it in spring to a container with a diameter 2 inches larger than the current pot. Mature plants that fill their pots are very fragile; they tend to lose their leaves and fall apart when handled. Propagate new plants from stem tip cuttings when re-potting becomes difficult.
PROPAGATION. Donkey tail is easy to propagate from stem tip cuttings and leaf cuttings.
TIP: Plant your burro’s tail cactus in a hanging pot with other succulents for a beautiful display of color and texture.
